Aru (trans: Her People) are a collection of dissident tribes who rebelled against the Nine-Pillared Kingdoms (the Iratek) some two hundred years before present during the Crisis of Many Nights and the subsequent Red Flower Wars.​ This heavy decision was brought on by a crisis: underneath Nuath’s vast waterways, horrible things had been streaming into the planet’s verdant lands, straining the ecosystem. Native wildlife is an increasingly precious sight, and the Aru can feel the cycle crack under this alien strain. For fifty years, the Nine-Pillared Kingdoms fought a losing war against the horrors that rose from the Deep Places, holding ground with heavy losses while the land was slowly sapped of its strength until a priest received a vision. Somewhere beyond the cowl of their world, a great tree, a being of immeasurable power, had felt Nuath’s suffering and had come to the ailing lands. Laculathon, the Blood Tree, reached out to the priests of the Nine Temples in fevered dreams, offering a single covenant: “Abandon your gods and sacrifice to me, for I shall drive away the beast which gnaws at the heart of your world. Such is My covenant to all who embrace Me.”

Of the Nine Pillars, three broke ties and made pilgrimage to the half-digested mountain Laculathon had anchored Herself to. True to the covenant, the Aru sacrificed tens of thousands of animals and beings to Laculathon, glutting its roots with blood. In return, the God Tree has transformed them into harbingers of the cycle of life and death itself. After much conflict, the three tribes became recognized as Servants of Laculathon, the Witches in the Roots, whom they have served ever since.
